The Eighth Deadly Sin :

Have you heard about the seven deadly sins?Yes, I'm taking about pride, envy, anger, greed, gluttony, sloth and lust. Deadly as these may be, I think there's one far deadlier that didn't make the list, perhaps because it's one that's impossible to conclusively pin on someone. And that's the sin of apathy. A sin, unfortunately, which so many of us are guilty of in so many different ways. We go through lifeimpassively, with total indifference to everything around us. We're unwilling to act, not because of sloth, but because of an unholy lack of interest and concern. Nothing will change, so why bother doing anything about it anyway is the defeatist attitude we often tend to adopt. And that's the main reason, for instance, why we're seeing the great city of

Mumbai fall apart at the seams, while we turn a blind eye to every kind of criminal excess and injustice that unfolds right before our eyes.
I saw evidence of apathy of a different kind at the AGM of the Mumbai Chapter of the CSI recently. Not apathy from the handful of people present of course, but from those members who chose not to attendÑwho by their very absence proclaimed their apathy to the one Society that can potentially play a hugely significant role in speeding up India's nation-status from “developing” to “developed”.
Fortunately, not everyone is apathetic. We've seen evidence of this as ordinary citizens made a difference to people around them during and in the aftermath of the July 26th cloudburst over suburban Mumbai. And now we're seeing this in the CSI, as volunteers are coming forward to help rejuvenate and galvanise this august body, and hopefully take it far beyond the heights it scaled in days gone by.

But this is not enough. True, we have committed individuals manning the committees at the national level and the managing committee at the Mumbai chapter level. And the ripples of change are already beginning to be felt. Yet, to use a Biblical analogy, The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. We need many more of you to stand up and be counted. Tell us your ideas, write in with your suggestions, and then come forward and let's all work together in implementing whatever is feasible.
Shrug off that apathy today. You can make a huge difference.
